It does not matter if a person breathes-in, swallows, or absorbs lead particles, the health effects are the same. Lead can be found almost everywhere in the environment; in paint, soil, air, water and even consumer products. Lead has been used in a wide variety of products found in and around our homes, including paint, ceramics, pipes and plumbing materials, solders, gasoline, batteries, ammunition, and cosmetics. J3’s lead laboratory is accredited by the US EPA under the National Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program (NLLAP); AIHA-LAP, LLC’s Environmental Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELLAP) and ISO/IEC 17025:2005(E). J3 uses EPA, NIOSH, and ASTM methodologies for lead analysis utilizing three Flame AA’s and an ICP. J3 turnaround rates are unmatched – providing clients with efficient, high quality results.

Metals in Air Industrial Hygiene Program
NIOSH 7082 – Lead by Flame AAS (In Air)
This method utilizes a 0.8 µm mixed cellulose ester membrane filter to determine worker exposure to aerosols containing lead. The working range is 0.05 to >1 mg/ m3 for a 200-liter air sample. The method is applicable to elemental lead, including lead (Pb) fume, and all other aerosols containing lead. The Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) set by OSHA for the maximum worker exposure to lead is 50 μg/m3 averaged over an eight-hour period.
OSHA ID-121 – Metal & Metalloid Particulates in Workplace Atmospheres
This method can determine the amount of specific metal and metalloid particulates in the workplace atmosphere. The airborne particulates are collected on filters using calibrated sampling pumps. These samples are then analyzed using flame atomic absorption or emission spectrometry. This method can also determine specific metals and metalloids contained in wipe and bulk samples. The identification and quantification of the particulate is directly determined as the element.

Environmental Lead Program
USEPA SW-846 3rd Ed. 7420/3050B - Lead In Paint, Soil, and Surfaces (Wipes)
This method will report the total concentration of lead in three different types of materials: Paint, Soil, and Dust (via wipes).
USEPA SW-846 1311/3010A/7420 - Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)
This is an extraction method used to simulate the leaching of potentially hazardous materials (i.e. lead) through a landfill and into the environment. A TCLP is primarily used to characterize waste (soil, blasting sand, etc.) to determine which type of facility will be utilized for disposal based on its hazardousness.

I know this is the standard operating procedure for J3, but they really helped me out with a mistake I made on a survey. I had to go back to the project site to take some additional samples late in the afternoon. It was extremely important that our client received results and report that day.
