Environmental Microbiology

The J3’s environmental microbiology laboratory is accredited by AIHA-LAP, LLC and in compliance with all ISO/IEC 17025:2005 requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. J3’s well trained and experienced staff is run by a Ph.D. microbiologist with over 10 years’ experience in the analysis of air, bulk, water, soil, and surface samples for mold, bacteria, allergens, and other pathogens providing our clients with the highest quality data available. Molds are part of the natural environment and can be found almost anywhere trace amounts of moisture are present. Outdoors, molds play an important role in nature by breaking down dead organic matter, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided. Mold growth can occur indoors on building materials such as wood, paper, and carpet, provided a moisture source is present.

MOLD IN AIR
SPORE TRAPS (AIR-O-CELL, ALLERGENCO-D)
Allow for rapid collection and identification of both viable and non-viable airborne particulates, such as fungi, using air impaction cassettes. Particulate containing air is pulled by a vacuum pump through a cassette containing a glass slide coated with adhesive collection media. After collection, this slide is prepared and analyzed by the laboratory using light microscopy.
CULTURE PLATES (ANDERSON SAMPLERS)
Used for the identification of viable fungal spores in the air. A vacuum pump draws air across the culture media for a given time. Samples are incubated and genus of culturable fungal spores is reported.

Swabs
This method is used for the collection of a specimen on a building material. Swabs are convenient for sampling hard to reach areas. Analysis is conducted using a light microscope to identify and provide relative abundance of fungal spores and/or hyphal structures. Swabs may be used to collect a sample for further analysis on culture plates. [_/su_spoiler]
Tape Lifts
This is the simplest method for the physical collection of a visible specimen on a building material. Clear tape is used to physically sample suspect areas. Analysis is conducted using a light microscope to identify and provide relative abundance of fungal spores and/or hyphal structures. [_/su_spoiler]
Bulk Materials
This method requires sample material be brought into the lab for analysis. Analysis is conducted using a light microscope to identify and provide relative abundance of fungal spores and/or hyphal structures. [_/su_spoiler][_/su_accordion]

Contact / Culture Plates
This method involves the introduction of fungal spores to a culturable media by either swab or direct exposure to air/surface. Samples are inoculated onto culture plates for genus identification of culturable fungi. [_/su_spoiler]

This method is used for the collection of a specimen on a building material. Swabs are convenient for sampling hard to reach areas. Samples collected on swabs are inoculated onto culture plates for genus identification of culturable fungi. [_/su_spoiler]
Bulk Materials
This method requires sample material be brought into the lab for analysis. Subsamples of suspect areas of bulk material are inoculated onto culture media for genus identification of culturable fungi. [_/su_spoiler][_/su_accordion]
BACTERIA
TOTAL COLIFORMS/E. COLI
This test allows for detection (Presence/Absence) of total coliforms and E. coli. Coliform bacteria are bacterial indicators of sanitary quality of foods and water. Included in this assay is the presence or absence of E. coli, a type of fecal coliform. Samples may be brought in as water, swab, or bulk samples. This test can be combined with the Enterococcus test and acts as a “Sewage Screen” in Black Water / Gray Water scenarios. Results take 24 hours minimally due to the required growth time for bacteria. Results are sensitive to one colony forming unit per 100 mL in 24 hours.
ENTEROCOCCI

LEGIONELLA
Legionnaires’ disease is a severe, often lethal, form of pneumonia. It is caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila found in both potable and non-potable water systems. Samples are typically brought in as water or swab form. J3’s Legiolert test detects Legionella pneumophila at one organism in 100 mL within seven days.

I know this is the standard operating procedure for J3, but they really helped me out with a mistake I made on a survey. I had to go back to the project site to take some additional samples late in the afternoon. It was extremely important that our client received results and report that day. I wasn’t able to get to the lab until 4:05 and by 4:20 I had the results and the report, which made it possible for me to get the report out before 5.
