IH CHEM PLANT REFINERY EHS
INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE FOR CHEMICAL PLANTS/PETROLUEM REFINERIES
Considered the “Father of Occupational Medicine” Bernardino Ramazzini, was an Italian physician born in 1633. His book on occupational diseases, De Morbis Artificum Diatriba (Diseases of Workers) outlined the health hazards of chemicals, dust, metals, repetitive or violent motions, odd postures, and other disease-causative agents encountered by workers in more than fifty occupations. This was one of the founding and seminal works of occupational medicine and played a substantial role in its development. He proposed that physicians should extend the list of questions that Hippocrates recommended they ask their patients by adding, “What is your occupation?”. Ramazzini saw prevention as being better than cure. In his Oratio given in 1711, he suggested that “it is much better to prevent than to cure, and so much easier to foresee future harm and avoid it rather than have to get rid of it after having fallen prey”.
And while we’ve come a long way in recognizing and limiting hazards in the work environment, many of the hazards identified back then still exist today, just on a grander scale, and new hazards in the workplace continue to emerge. Industrial Hygiene has been defined as that science devoted to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of those environmental factors in the workplace, which may cause sickness, impaired health and well-being, or significant discomfort among workers or those living among them.
The development of industrial hygiene sciences is closely linked to the IH analytical laboratory. J3 can provide fully certified analyses for known workplace hazards/toxins including asbestos, environmental microbiology heavy metals, organics, lead, and many other threats to health of concern to the industrial hygiene professional. J3 currently provides IH analytical services to numerous chemical plants and petroleum refineries along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast.
J3 maintains accreditation by the American Industrial Hygiene Association Laboratory Accreditation Program (AIHA-LAP,LLC) in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Microbiology, and Environmental Lead.
